Ryton’s village green, which has a rich history with religious and social significance, is situated between Station Bank and Barmoor Lane.

Like many greens in similar villages, it played host to an annual fair which included jugglers, dancers and local stalls.

The Village Cross is the work of Thomas Chaucer, erected in 1795. It stands on a base which most likely predates the erection of the cross itself. The cross was for centuries the focal point of Hirings and Musters. John Wesley preached from this location on his first visit to Ryton in 1757, and similarly Charles Wesley in 1742.
